How do you say “What’s your name?” in Japanese?
Today’s phrase is :
What’s your name?
名前聞いてもいいですか?
namae kiitemo iidesuka*
*We do not clearly pronounce the vowels in the middle of a word. We pronounce “kiitemo” like “kītemo”, “iidesuka” like “īdesuka”.
- 名前 = your name
- 聞いてもいいですか = can I ask
The literal meaning of “名前聞いてもいいですか?” is “Can I ask your name?”.
We do not usually say “I = 私は (watashiwa)” or “your = あなたの (anatano)” in everyday conversation.

“名前聞いてもいいですか?” is a polite way of saying, but still sounds a bit casual. When we ask our clients for their names, we say :
お名前を伺ってもよろしいでしょうか?
onamaeo ukagattemo yoroshiideshouka**
**We pronounce “yoroshiideshouka” like “yoroshīdeshōka”.
